Why Your Story Matters

As a writer, I get the opportunity to interview some fascinating people, whether for a website, a bio, an article, a press release, or even a blog. While most people don’t always have trouble talking about themselves, I find that they do not enjoy writing about themselves.

I love to interview people. I love to listen to the story of a person’s life. I really enjoy the point in an interview when they start to open up and share pieces of their history, explaining their journey, which usually connects their past to their current place in life.

Shout it from the roof tops!

Occasionally, I do run into someone who doesn’t like to talk about themselves. They feel like they are bragging. You know what I say? I say that if you have worked hard, you are good at something, and it relates to your business, shout it from the roof tops. Loud and proud!

I have a favorite story that I like to share, especially when a client has a hard time expanding on their experience and skills. My story is about a handyman who had started his own business and needed an About Us section written for his website. He explained that he didn’t enjoy writing, and found that he just could not write about himself.

Differentiate yourself from the herd.

The current About Us section on his website addressed his business in general, such as the services he provided. While the page did explain his services, it did not differentiate him from his competitors. As far as I knew, all handyman services offered what he offered. After asking him just a few questions, he started to open up. I discovered that he had grown up on and worked on his family’s hobby farm, fixing fences, painting, cleaning barns, organizing the garage, etc. As a young adult, he had worked for his father, who was a custom home builder. At one point in his life, he had even owned his own home building business. He had an amazing history that was not only interesting, but filled with relevant experience. If I was comparing handyman companies and read his story, I would pick this guy!

If you are in business and have a chance to tell your story, whether on your website, social media, or a press release, consider it an opportunity to differentiate yourself from the herd. Every word matters. Tell your story.

Have a hard time writing about yourself? We can help. Prime Advertising offers copywriting services that will help you and your business stand out.
