How easy do we make it for others to do business with us? This is a question that every business should consider. Google has presumably asked themselves this same question recently, as they are preparing to address how they serve their mobile audience.

Google has reported extreme growth in mobile users on their search engine and expect mobile to surpass desktop searches this year. Considering this, Google aims to give the mobile visitor the best experience by recommending sites that are mobile friendly. Gone are the days of sites that require you to “pinch in zoom” and welcomed are sites that are either fully responsive or mobile friendly.

How Will This Affect Google Rankings?

Taken right from Google’s announcement, “This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results.” This is a very bold statement and is considered the most important and highest impact algorithm update yet from Google. The leader in the search industry clearly feels strongly about delivering not only the most relevant, but also the highest quality results that are optimized for a given device.

Google does not share all the details of this update, so businesses will not know the full impact until after the April 21st update. Speculation is that non-mobile friendly websites will not be punished or discounted like those that take part in black hat techniques, but rather sites that are mobile friendly will be heavily rewarded. This is one of the first times that Google has said, “You need to do this!” Search Engine Optimizers all over the world would wish Google was always this direct.

One requirement from Google is that all indexed pages on a website be mobile friendly, not just the home page. This means that creating a simple one page mobile landing page will not suffice. Google indexes several pages on a given site and they will all need to be mobile friendly.

What Should You Do About It?

The first step is to consult with whomever built your website. There will be multiple options for you ranging from creating a mobile version of your site to a complete rebuild to make it 100% responsive.

As Maple Grove is the City that Prime Advertising and many of its employees call home, it is very important to us to stay connected with all the many wonderful and exciting things happening. That’s why we were very excited to be awarded the redesign of their new website (!

The old website was rather cumbersome and it was often difficult to locate the information you were looking for. The goal of the new website was to make the user’s experience on the website stress-free, interactive and even fun!

Prime’s designers gave movement to the homepage with a rotating slideshow that showcases resident and city activities in Maple Grove. To clear the stuffiness that some city sites fall victim to, Prime went with a fresh, up-beat look, using rich greens and blues, and the latest technology allowing for a wider screen display. User-friendly drop-down navigation and highlights that “pop,” create multiple ways for users to navigate to each service or specific page inside the site.

The task of re-organizing the abundance of information on the Maple Grove website was a large undertaking indeed! Once everyone agreed on the look of the site, a large portion of the project’s time was allocated to streamlining all of Maple Grove’s information so that it was much easier to find on the new site.

It was very important that the city stay connected with residents and able to provide the most recent news and city developments in simple, easy-to-update ways. The new site integrates three channels to achieve this goal. First, Prime introduced the City of Maple Grove to the idea of blogging as a means of keeping residents current, sharing updates on new business activity and city events like Maple Grove Days and National Night Out. Second, a “Latest News area was incorporated into the site, where short city, county and district announcements are rotated in a small area of every page. Lastly, a Calendar page was created, allowing the City of Maple Grove to log City Council meetings, commission meetings, special performances, farmers market dates and much more. Residents can click on individual calendar events for more information, times and directions.

Using the ElementZ Content Management System, the individual departments are now able to manage and update their city services and resident resources easily. As a team, Prime Advertising and the City staff were able to get this fun and informative website live in time for summer festivities!

We are pleased to see that all of the hard work that the City of Maple Grove and Prime Advertising have put into this project is paying off, with wonderful reviews from residents and employees alike. “When I go to a website, I get frustrated easy when I have to spend so much time trying to figure it out…In our website, it’s just such a smooth flow,” says Al Madsen, Maple Grove’s City Administrator.

Since 1969 Plymouth Heights Pet Hospital has provided high-quality veterinarian and pet hospital services in New Hope and surrounding areas. As an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accredited practice, PHPH aims to maintain the highest-quality patient care, equipment and procedures possible. In recent months, in continuing with their efforts to remain state-of-the-art, Plymouth Heights Pet Hospital turned to Prime Advertising for a logo enhancement and a new website.

The new website was designed using Elementz, a content management system that provides improved ability to communicate with clients and a user-friendly navigation system. Prime’s team created a website design that embraces PHPH’s earth-toned brand theme, with a layout that is fresh, clean and welcoming.

Their new site includes a variety of galleries with crisp, clear photographs to enhance visual appeal and maintain user interest. PHPH was also excited about the addition of a randomizing testimonial area to showcase their outstanding client reviews. By integrating the Elementz Content Management System, PHPH is able take full control of their website, making updates and changes anytime they want. Since the launch of their new site, the number of new visitors and the amount of time visitors spend on pages have both increased dramatically.

Prime also helped PHPH with a new blog called “Chew on This” to share updates and relevant news with their customers and to increase search engine optimization (SEO).
