What Are Your Website’s Resolutions for 2008?

website new years resolutionYou might be already breaking the resolutions you set for yourself in 2008 or maybe you’re one of the few that always sees them to fruition, either way have you thought about your website’s resolutions for 2008?

Here is a list of three basic website resolutions you might have this coming year.  No matter if you set just one, or make a list of 50, the most important point is to keep your website on your mind for how it can grow, evolve and succeed.

Website Resolution #1 - Web Stats / Analytics
For some their website’s stats are gold, and others have long forgotten how to even check them.  There are patterns, successes, failures and opportunities logged in those stats so pay attention.  If you haven’t looked in forever, make a goal to check monthly and start asking questions.  If you’re already in there daily or weekly, find new ways to dig into your data, analyze, compare and try new ways to improve towards your goals.  You may want to look into a better analytics program (we work with Urchin and Google Analytics).  2008 is the year to start valuing the truth behind your website.

Website Resolution #2 - New Content
Set a goal or specific dates for creating and adding new content to your website.  So many small businesses forget to keep their latest happenings and offerings updated on the site and turn things stale.  Create a committee to offer up quarterly ideas and implement them.  Also keep in mind different types of content such as blogs, video and social websites will continue to add value.  Your content should have a goal as well … what are you wanting users to do with your content?  Develop content with a strategy in mind. If you can’t make changes to your website yourself, you can explore content management solutions. Maybe explore the services of a copywriter and get their valuable input.  2008 is the year to get new life into your website.

Website Resolution #3 - Usability
Make it easy.  Don’t make them think.  The mom test.  Users of your website want to enjoy their visit. I’m not talking about offering drinks and snacks while they interact (if you do, please email me), but reducing frustration and increasing the answers they find.  Make it easy by offering clear navigation and also making good use of internal links in your copy.  Don’t make them guess where to find information by using clear site structure, offering a site search function, a site map and page names/headers that make sense.  If you are struggling to address what might be a problem on your site, maybe take the time to survey your users and find out what they like, dislike or want to see.  If that sounds too overwhelming, just ask your mom to click around your site.  Chances are she’ll provide some basic feedback that will improve your sites usability.

The days of 2008 are already trickling away, so get out there and make a resolution or two for your website and follow through.  If you need a little kick start, or even a big one, our web services can do the trick.  Have a great 2008!
