3 Tips For Taking Good Photos For Websites or Print Ads
I spent an hour yesterday at a new client’s restaurant taking some photos to use for a print ad they are doing and also collecting some good assets for when we do their website project. Nothing too fancy here, but with just remembering these three things you can take better photos for your website or marketing materials yourself. These even come into play if you work with a professional photographer, while they most likely are very accomplished and talented, you can have a better idea of suggestions or input on capturing powerful and creative shots.
1. Lighting. We have a set of 3 external lights and two were used in yesterdays shots. Using the flash from your camera just doesn’t cut it a majority of the time. You get glare, hot spots and lose true color. If needed, you can even resort to utility lamps as long as you difuse the light a bit. Too much direct light and you’ll "burn" it out. Play around with it, you’ll get it right.
2. Angles. Find a more interesting angle to present your item or shot. Don’t just take the same shot anyone would standing there. As you can see in the photos below I dropped down to eye level with the food items and the beer. You’ll even notice a stirred the beer to get some bubbles moving. The little extras help!

3. Tripod. Nothing worse than a bunch of blurry shots. Use a tripod as much as possible to keep your shots steady. Especially when shooting people, like below, you need to have all the steadiness you can … because they will move a lot!
I hope these three basic photography tips help you out. A good focus on them goes a long way. If you like what you see, you can always hire us too!
