Google Phone / Platform: What Might The Advertising Options Be?
Google has let out the news that it is looking to standardize the mobile phone platform by creating an open source environment with the powers that wish to take part. Sprint, T-Mobile and Samsung are just a few of the ones stepping forward right now to create a universal platform dubbed Android.
As they get that sorted out I wanted to look in the advertising and marketing services that might take place with Google involved and their goal to bring more internet access and tools to this platform. Obviously Google is looking to broaden it’s network/community/offering with this endeavor, so lets look at what a small business might be able to do with this.
- Movie and popcorn anyone? Just tap the movie icon and current listings are right there. Hey look, the theater in Maple Grove is offering $2 off admission if we show our cell screen with this ad (that they purchased). I can really see coupons tying in with small business ads.
- Hungry? Tap the fork icon and you are taken to nearby restaurants … who have purchased text ads and updated them with their featured items or nightly specials.
- Want to know your getting a good price? Tap the "Google Compare" icon and then enter the product … Bam! Prices from 4 other nearby stores and maybe a few online retailers.
So these are just my broad guesses. Creating a more friendlier internet experience with built in tools for the common needs of the user. For small businesses, it’s about having the opportunity to reach potential customers when they are right outside your door or a few blocks away. If Google can make that connection happen, then how great is it for small business? Pretty sweet if you ask me.
