The Numbers Don’t Lie, The Importance of Web Analytics
Since you have the ability to understand how your website is being reached, used and performing, why wouldn’t you leverage that?
Having just ended a meeting with my staff on our community guide website, we spent most of the meeting reviewing our reports from our host’s stat tool, Google Analytics and Crazy Egg (currently using free trial). Digging through these tools and services answered our important questions as we look to re-layout, redesign and improve the site. Here are a few things we answered thanks to our numbers:
- Ease and location of navigation: We easily identified what areaas of naviagation people were using the most and also the steps they were most interested in using
- Popular sections and pages: The amount of clicks into specific sections of the site let us know we need to "unbury" some of the most sought after information.
- Unpopular pages and information: Cut the fat! We saw some pages that don’t get any attention and need to be dropped or improved ASAP.
- Traffic sources: From other sites, directories and search engines we can break down our traffic source and identify how to improve.
