How Good Design is Like Pizza

Pizza and DesignIn an effort to bring more of the great minds and talents that our office contains to the blog, I posed a question to our designers at Prime.  After eating some incredible pizza for lunch the other day at Solo’s Pizza with our team, I was left pondering the elements of a good pizza … and then it morphed into the elements of good design … and then I put the two together. Can you even follow how my mind works?  Most of the time I can’t either.

So here are some answers from our design staff when asked how good design is like pizza:

Natalie: The rule that “less is more” applies to both good design and Pizza! Why do you think everyone loves a pepperoni pizza, in a group it is the only kind that you can get everyone to agree on, Right? I did a little research for this question and the Classic Margherita Pizza, with fresh tomatoes, olive oil and basil leaves is the most famous type of pizza worldwide. I order this kind of pizza all the time, it is definitely a favorite of mine! Good design is not a supreme pizza. Good designs need to stand out, stand alone and be powerful. Classic. Delicious. Simple. Powerful. To the point. An Art Form.

Julie: Good design is like pizza because you can throw just about anything on it, but that doesn’t make it good. It takes the right combination to make a good design — knowledge, experience, expertise, creativity — just as it takes the right combination of ingredients to make a good pizza.

Jeff:  No matter what toppings you get on pizza it’s always awesome!  Some people like to keep it simple (just pepperoni, or just onions) and that’s cool because they love their simple one toppers.  Others like it a bit more complex (supreme, veggie, meats) and that suits their taste. Everyone has their own tastes and its the same with design.  Finding that perfect combination for your clients is what makes your design delicious. My favorite designs are covered with Canadian bacon and pineapple…man I’m hungry!!!!

Addy: When creating your print collateral or website marketing materials, if you have good design as the main ingredient, it always comes out great!

Kathy: Good Design is like pizza because it involves many different, unique ingredients, blended together in perfect synergy. No matter how many ways you slice it, if you start with a good design (recipe), each piece is an important part of the whole. And like pizza, good design is a satisfying treat to behold.

Rob: You don’t need it, but it sure brings people to the table.

So there you have it … you’re either hungry for good pizza now or hungry for good design.  Feel free to give us your thoughts on this!

  1. Great analogy between the two…and I am definatly hungry for pizza now!

  2. And another one - they are both built in layers. You start with a good base and add the ingredients one at a time.

  3. You forgot one thing. Good design is appealing to the eye, but good pizza is appealing to the stomach. Thanks for making me hungry. I’m going to lunch now!

  4. Thanks for your additions to the list Char and Barb. Nice take with the layers. I would also add the process … the time it takes to do it right. I’m envisioning tossing a web design in the air and spinning it … ala pizza dough style, working to the desired form!

  5. What a great activity - and an awesome blog!

Thank you for visiting my site today! I will definitely be adding you to my blogroll! Your posts are very fun, informative, and really challenge people to think outside the box!
