To Be President You Must Connect (online)

USA Today did a technology feature in their Money section today called "e-lection".  The article takes a look at how presidential and gubernatorial candidates in 2007 are heavily dependant on technology in their campaigns and basically run them like a tech start-up.

John Edwards ScreenshotIf you visit John Edwards website (I really like the design and layout), you’ll see the email sign-up, video features and the one that caught my eye, the "Connect With The Campaign" section.  Here they have icon/buttons to the various social media sites they have information on like YouTube, MySpace, Flickr and facebook. My how times are changing.  These elements/materials sure beat the brochure or flyer wedged in my front door.

The make-up of their campaign teams has changed as well with Hillary Clinton having a CTO on staff.  Many others have video staff capturing as much as possible and then packaging it for online play and review. You can bet these candidates take a peek at campaign volunteers and look for web/programming/video/internet skills.  Just as many small businesses use the internet to leverage their marketing dollars, so now are these political pros.

So why am I posting about this?
As a small business, you have these same challenges.  How do I build a passionate base of voters/customers?  How do I leverage my valuable dollar to reach the masses?  How to I offer multiple ways for those interested to connect and support (do business with) me?  Try viewing things as a campaign manager … let (insert your business name here) run for president.  Analyze how you can utilize the Internet to communicate, market, empower your faithful customers to attract new ones, create touchpoints and increase your desired result.
