What I Learned In Month One Of Blogging

I’ve been blogging for a couple of personal blogs for well over a year, but the Prime blog is very different with it’s company ties.  One of the big reasons I finally jump started the Prime blog was every time I tried to encourage a client to start a blog they would ask "Are you blogging?".  I was tired of replying "Ummm … no".  It was time to practice what I preach.

So here are a few of the things I have learned blogging this past month, the good and the middle ground (nothing really bad to report).

The Good:

  • It has fueled my creativity and writing skills.
  • It has increased my reading of other blogs on web design, marketing, seo and blogging.
  • The blog continues to grow in daily readers and subscribers (you should be one).
  • The blog’s traffic has also grown the company website traffic by 15%.
  • It’s honing my research skills by conducting "homework" on topics.
  • It’s a great way to promote our great clients.
  • It’s a great way to focus on our services and expertise.
  • The power of RSS.
  • Blogging has created some great connections with other professionals and bloggers.

The Middle:

  • Time consumption. Blogging is one more thing to fit into my hectic schedule.
  • Topic flow and selection.  Some days it just flows and other days I have to hunt for ideas.
  • An addiction to MyBlogLog and FeedBurner stats. It’s that quick fix for validation.  :)
  • Waiting for others at Prime to get addicted, so my load can be lightened.
  • I feel compelled to post daily during the week as not to let anyone down that is expecting something from me.

I know that last one may have you laughing … but it’s true.  One of the other great things I didn’t mention was that I created a "Prime Blog Handbook" that was a cross between a business plan, blogging tips and a "how to" guide for company blogging.  It was a fun document to put together and I’m considering adding to it as it would be beneficial to other if tweaked a little.

So now when a client asks if we’re blogging … we most certainly are.  The other good news is I have one client being set-up with a blog next week and another close to pulling the trigger.  I’ll have fun helping them off the ground and seeing what they learn as well.

PS-  Good luck Buffalo Bison! (’92 grad) in the Boys State Basketball Class 4A Championship game Saturday night.  I’ll be at Target Center for the fun.)
